The February edition of the Celebrating the Chartists newsletter leads with the Welsh Government’s call for Newport to ‘fully recognise and develop’ the Chartist contribution to British democracy and the response from the city’s Business Task Force to this approach to regeneration. Other features look at schools engaging with the history of local Chartism, Pontypool in 1839, and the Newport Museum. Here’s a link also to the December edition which features the commitment from Newport council to ‘adopt the Chartist heritage in its entirety’. There’s a great events list — this year marks the 175th anniversary of the People’s Charter. The editor, Les James, tells the story of 1838.
